Uganda’s boys made a promising start at the All Africa Junior Team Championship, staying within reach of the leaders after the opening round at Windsor Golf & Country Club in Nairobi.

They returned a team score of 230 to sit fourth, just one stroke behind third-placed Mauritius. Antony Otukei led the effort with a steady 73, while Peter Mayende and Shaka Kariisa added 78 and 79. Rugumambaju JP carded 81 to complete a solid opening day.

South Africa set the pace at 212, with Kenya second on 220. With only two slots available for the 2026 Toyota Junior World Cup in Tokyo, Uganda remains in contention heading into day two.

Kariisa admitted he faded late but is confident of improving. He noted the course is tight but manageable and stressed the need to stay focused throughout the round.

The girls, however, struggled on day one. Uganda sits sixth with 167, led by Racheal Natukunda (83) and Keisha Kagoro (84), while Elizabeth Kawalya posted 96. They trail leaders South Africa by 27 strokes, with Kenya and Tunisia ahead in second and third.

Team manager Paul Habyarimana believes both teams can respond. He said the players understand what is needed going forward.

Light morning showers affected play and similar conditions are expected, but teams are prepared.

Uganda is competing under the guidance of Flavia Namakula.
