Ugandan cyclists put up a spirited show at the 2025 Jubilee Live Free Race in Nairobi, returning home with medals and pride after strong performances across several categories.

The 100-member Ugandan contingent joined over 3,500 participants from more than 20 countries at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, October 5, for one of East Africa’s biggest cycling events.

In the Main Race (Men, 75 km), Uganda’s Charles Kagimu produced a powerful ride to finish second behind Kenya’s Jordan Schleck.

In the women’s category, Mary Aleper also claimed silver, marking Uganda’s presence on both elite podiums.

Uganda’s dominance was clearest in the Black Mamba (45 km) race, reserved for single-speed bicycles popular for daily transport.

Kato William took gold, with Mugonda Dominik and Aziz Ssempijja completing an all-Ugandan podium sweep.

In the Veteran Category, Matovu David showed experience still counts, winning gold while Ssebulime Augustine earned bronze in the Para Category, continuing Uganda’s proud tradition in adaptive cycling.

Beyond competition, this year’s race promoted mobility, sustainability, and community health.

Organizers supported children with prosthetic limbs, planted food towers in schools, and encouraged cycling as a lifestyle.

Uganda, now in its third consecutive appearance, is fast building a reputation as one of the region’s cycling powerhouses, its depth and consistency growing with every race.

Winners shared a prize pool of UGX 107.3 million, along with trophies and other rewards.
