Ugandan Premier League to continue with new format despite clubs division

A crucial meeting between the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and Uganda Premier League clubs on September 9 ended with a major split, as three top clubs walked out in protest. The meeting, held at the Serena Hotel in Kampala, was intended to finalize a new format for the league, but it quickly turned into a heated debate.

After four hours of discussion, 13 clubs agreed to FUFA’s proposed changes. However, Vipers SC, SC Villa, and NEC FC rejected the plan, with their leaders—Dr. Lawrence Mulindwa, Haj. Omar Mandela, and Brian Muhanda, respectively—resigning from their posts mid-meeting. They accused FUFA of politicizing the sport and intimidating club officials.

Despite the walkout, the remaining clubs continued the meeting, ultimately voting to approve the new league structure. Deo Kasozi of Kitara FC stated the new format would increase competition and create more exciting matchups for fans.

Breakdown of the New Uganda Premier League Format

The newly approved format is a significant departure from the previous 30-match season. The new structure will feature a three-round system designed to increase the number of high-stakes games.

  • Round 1: All 16 teams will play a single round-robin, with each team competing in 15 matches.
  • Round 2: The league will be split into two groups based on standings: the top eight and the bottom eight. Each group will play a round-robin, with each team playing 14 matches.
  • Round 3: The top six teams from the top-eight group will play a final round-robin of five matches to determine the league champion. The bottom six teams from the bottom-eight group will do the same to finalize relegation.

Under this system, the top teams could play up to 34 matches, while others will play 29 or 32.

Relegation and Promotion

The new format also changes how teams move between divisions:

  • The two bottom-ranked teams will face direct relegation.
  • The third-to-last team will enter a playoff against the third-place team from the second-tier league.
  • The top two teams from the second-tier league will earn direct promotion to the Uganda Premier League.

FUFA President Moses Magogo Hashim acknowledged the disagreement, stating, “We will continue to engage them because we need them—all our teams.” The new format aims to enhance the competitiveness and commercial appeal of Ugandan football.
