Ugandan professional golfer Willy Deus Kitata won his maiden Sunshine Development Tour Invitational title on Friday, January 16 at Thika Greens Golf Resort in Kenya.

Kitata held off stiff resistance from the Kenyan duo of David Wakhu and Njoroge Kibugu to register one of the biggest wins of his professional career.

Despite dropping shots on the back nine, the 2014 Uganda Amateur Open winner showed composure and experience to post a three-round total of 5-under par 208, edging his closest challengers by a single stroke to secure the win.

The victory marks Deus’ first Sunshine Development Tour title on Kenyan soil, further underlining his growing stature on the regional professional golf circuit. Wakhu and Kibugu both settled for second place, while Greg Snow of Muthaiga Golf Club and Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo both finished on 3-under par 210, continuing Uganda’s strong showing on the Sunshine Development Tour.

The tournament has attracted 75 golfers from across Africa, competing for prize money, Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, and valuable Sunshine Tour Order of Merit standings.

Following his victory, Kitata now turns his attention to the season-ending leg at Karen Country Club, where the overall Order of Merit champion will be crowned.
