This weekend marks the final game in the illustrious playing career of Michael Wokorach, one of Uganda’s most decorated and influential rugby talents. 

As fans pack the stands to witness the closing chapter of a career that has spanned nearly two decades, rugby enthusiasts across the country are reflecting on a journey built on leadership, resilience, and achievement.

From Bugolobi to National Glory

Wokorach’s rugby story began humbly, rising through local club rugby at Toyota Buffaloes to become a cornerstone of both club and national teams. 

Over the years, his name became synonymous with consistency and excellence, earning him respect not only in Uganda but across African rugby circles. 

Club Success and Domestic Dominance

At club level, Wokorach has been a pillar for the Heathens Rugby Club, where his leadership and physical presence were central to some of the team’s most successful seasons. 

He helped drive his side through league campaigns with drive and passion great performances that contributed to Heathens’ unbeaten seasons and memorable victories. 

Along the way, he also earned individual honours such as the ForteBet Real Stars Rugby Player of the Month, which recognized his outstanding performances even among rising young stars. 

A National Team Mainstay

Wokorach’s influence stretches far beyond club rugby. He has been one of the most capped players for the Uganda Rugby Sevens national team since making his debut in 2009, appearing in more international tournaments than almost any other player of his generation. 

He represented Uganda at major multisport events including four Commonwealth Games (2010, 2014, 2018, 2022) and two Rugby World Cup Sevens (2018 and 2022), bringing intensity and strategic nous to every match. 

At the 2022 World Cup in Cape Town, he helped the team secure a Bowl victory  marking one of the proudest moments in Uganda’s rugby history. 

On the continental stage, Wokorach was a driving force behind Uganda’s success at the Africa Rugby Sevens Cup, where the team clinched titles and solidified its status as one of Africa’s top sevens sides. 

Leader, Mentor, and Ambassador

Wokorach’s impact wasn’t limited to play; he was a leader in every sense. 

As captain of the Rugby Cranes sevens team, he led by example, guiding younger players and imprinting a culture of hard work and professionalism. 

Even after stepping away from international sevens rugby in previous seasons, his legacy continued to influence the squad and the wider rugby community.

Beyond the pitch, Wokorach became a recognizable ambassador for Ugandan sport. 

His longevity in a physically demanding game exemplified dedication, while his ability to adapt  from the back row to key positional roles  showcased his rugby intelligence and versatility.
