Uganda’s national team, the Cranes, are set to face defending champions Senegal in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-finals. This marks a historic achievement for the Cranes, as they have advanced to the final eight for the very first time.
After topping Group C with two wins, one loss, and a thrilling 3-3 draw against South Africa, Uganda secured their spot in the knockout stage. Their quarter-final opponents, Senegal, didn’t have as strong a group stage performance. The reigning CHAN champions finished second in Group D after a goalless draw with group leaders Sudan.
Senegal played three group matches, winning one and drawing two to accumulate five points. The two teams have a history, having met seven times in competitive matches.
Senegal holds a slight advantage with three wins to Uganda’s one, with three matches ending in a draw. Notably, Uganda’s last encounter with Senegal was a 1-0 loss during the 2022 CHAN.
The quarter-final matches are scheduled for Friday, August 22, and Saturday, August 23. While Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Morocco will play their matches on Friday, co-host Uganda will take on Senegal on Saturday. The other quarter-final match will see Algeria face off against Sudan.
