2025 FIBA Women AfroBasket
- Côte d’Ivoire 78-71 Uganda
Uganda’s Gazelles closed their FIBA Women’s Afrobasket campaign with a fighting display but lost 78–71 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the seventh-place playoff on Saturday.
The Ivorians dominated the second quarter 25–5, building a 47–24 halftime lead. Uganda trailed 65–43 late in the third but responded with an 8–0 run to cut it to 65–51 heading into the fourth.
The Gazelles kept pushing and came within two points (71–69) with just over a minute to play, but late fouls let Côte d’Ivoire seal the win.
Captain Jane Asinde led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Melissa Akullu had 11 points and 12 boards, while Hope Akello added 10 points and six rebounds.
After the game, Asinde said:
“After the South Sudan game, our energy dropped. That’s something we need to work on. But this has been a big learning experience. We have a talented squad and a bright future.”
The Gazelles leave Ivory Coast proud, having shown heart and potential throughout the tournament despite starting strong and falling short against South Sudan through to the end.
