Uganda’s hopes for a strong start in the CECAFA U-18 Boys Championship were dashed on Sunday as they fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Tanzania at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega.
The rainy conditions played a significant role in Uganda’s downfall, according to coach Morley Byekwaso.
“The wet surface with a lot of water affected us, but we must prepare and bounce back strongly. We also have to improve on striking force since we failed to convert the chances,” Byekwaso stated.
Tanzania’s Wilson Sharif was the hero for his side, scoring a free-kick past Uganda’s goalkeeper Abdu Magada in the 15th minute. The goal proved to be the winner, as Uganda’s attempts to equalize were thwarted by the Tanzanian defense.
Tanzania’s coach, Habibu Kondo Kikwayu, was pleased with his team’s performance but cautioned against complacency.
“We need to keep working hard because there are many more games in this competition to be played,” Kikwayu noted.
Uganda now finds itself in a challenging position in Group B, alongside Tanzania, South Sudan, and Zanzibar. Zanzibar defeated South Sudan 1-0 in the other group fixture, thanks to a goal from Mohammad Ali in the 12th minute.
Action in Group A resumes on Tuesday with hosts Kenya facing Rwanda, while Somalia takes on Sudan in the second match at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Kisumu.
Uganda will look to get their campaign back on track when they face Zanzibar on Wednesday, while Tanzania will take on South Sudan.
