The University Football League is set for its biggest season yet as the 2025–2026 campaign kicks off with a record 29 teams and fresh rivalries across the country.

At a colorful draw ceremony held Thursday, September 18, at Kati Kati Restaurant, the Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) unveiled the groups and welcomed six new entrants.

The newcomers, King Ceasar University, Mountains of the Moon University, African Renewal University, Soroti University, and Lira University join an already competitive field.

Bishop Stuart University and Kyambogo University also return after previous suspensions.

AUUS General Secretary Patrick Ssebuliba, flanked by officials and team representatives, hailed the growth as a milestone for university sport.

“This expansion shows the hunger and talent at the university level. We are proud to give more students a national platform,” he said.

Champions begin defense

Reigning champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) Nkozi will open their title defense on Thursday, September 25, at Hamz Stadium, facing an opponent to be announced during the official curtain-raiser.

AUUS President Peninah Kabenge Aligawesa, who drew UMU’s group, said the expanded league underscores university football’s growing reputation.

“With 29 teams, the competition will be the fiercest we’ve ever seen,” she noted.

From Kampala’s historic Makerere University to newcomers like Soroti and Lira, the season promises a rich mix of tradition and fresh ambition.
