On Sunday, March 8, the Uganda Olympic Committee successfully organized an event at Olive School Namugongo, where Uganda joined the rest of the world in celebrating the 2026 Commonwealth Day.

The event, centered on ensuring a clean and green environment, incorporated educational sessions on Commonwealth Games Values for Pupils, led by the Uganda Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Uganda’s Dr. Donald Rukare.

The event attracted attention, including some of Uganda’s Commonwealth medalists such as Teddy Nakimuli (boxer), Juma Miiro (boxer), and Jonathan Kyobe (boxer), who joined UOC athletes’ representative Shadir Musa Bwogi in attendance.

The event was further amplified by International Women’s Day and also served as an official launch for the 137-day countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland, which was submitted by UOC and Commonwealth Games Uganda President Dr. Donald Rukare.

“As we celebrate the 2026 Commonwealth Day, also considering International Women’s Day, we are glad to officially launch the countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Such celebrations highlight the values we cherish as part of the Commonwealth family: unity, humanity, and equality,” he added.

The celebrations were held in partnership with the Banana Industrial Research and Development Centre (BIRDC), the producers of Tooke products; The Olive School Namugongo; and Little Hands Go Green.

Rev. Professor Florence Isabirye Muranga, the General Director of BIRDC, highlighted the relevance of proper nutrition to young and active athletes.

“Great champions of all time started humbly at schools like this.”

“Therefore, it is important to have a healthy mind in a healthy body to be excellent, and having a healthy body, you need A balanced diet.

The world needs intelligent and hardworking people to be agents of change to bring new records. Engage in games that have never been done before.

From the values of respect, togetherness, think globally, and always use products benchmarked by excelling professionals,” Rev. Prof. Muranga added.

Later, the pupils engaged in different games such as basketball together with Dr. Rukare, while activities like athletics, football, and Ideal Environment Preserving were benchmarked by Little Hands Go Green, a partner to UOC, in implementation.
