Upbeat start for Uganda National Hockey League 2025 season

Kampala Hockey Club fought back twice to secure a 4-4 draw against Wannanchi Sports in their respective season openers.

At Lugogo Hockey Ground, playing the final match of the league’s opening round on Sunday, March 2, 2025, Wannanchi took the lead in the 3rd minute through Jackson Musinguzi who went on to complete a hat-trick.

KHC responded immediately, scoring twice in the 4th minute through Paul Kayanga and Ian Green, taking a 2-1 lead in the early stages of the game.

Wannanchi equalized through Jordan Achaye after 9 minutes, and Musinguzi added to his tally in the 19th and 46th minutes.

As the game approached its conclusion, KHC found a way back through Brian Buyule and Aaron Mutenyo.

The latter’s goal sparked controversy, with questions raised about whether the ball had crossed the goal line, ultimately being awarded after consultation between the umpires.

The opening week featured nine games each in the men’s and women’s competitions, with four played on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

Wabalozi suffered a 13-1 defeat to Thunders, Makerere was beaten by Wannanchi Ladies, Weatherhead defeated Rockets 4-1, and Wannanchi won against Diamonds 7-0.

On Sunday, March 2nd, Weatherhead won against DCU Women’s 9-1, Weatherhead Titans lost 1-2 to Badgers, KHC Swans overwhelmed Thunders 21-0, and KHC Originals defeated Makerere 5-2.
