UPDF FC have dismissed head coach Paul Kiwanuka, bringing an abrupt end to a difficult spell that has left the army side staring at the threat of relegation.
Kiwanuka, popularly known as Coach Kiwa, was relieved of his duties on Tuesday alongside defensive coach Denis Oweka.
The decision comes with UPDF stuck in the relegation zone and struggling for form as the second round of the season begins.
Appointed ahead of the 2024–25 campaign after earning promotion from assistant coach, Kiwanuka’s rise was seen as a reward for continuity and trust from within. But early optimism quickly faded as results failed to improve.
UPDF sit 15th on the table with just 11 points from three wins all season. A six match winless run has deepened concerns and ultimately proved too heavy a burden for the technical bench.
Although the club did not spell out the reasons for the dismissal, the combination of poor results and league position told its own story.
In response, former club captain Musa Mudde has been appointed assistant coach, joining Alex Gitta on the revamped technical team. Mudde’s return is expected to bring leadership and belief to a squad low on confidence.
There will be little time for adjustment. UPDF open the second round at home against Buhimba United Saints, the same side they drew 2–2 with earlier in the season.
This time, the stakes are far higher as the army side search for a lifeline in their fight to stay up.
