Soltilo Bright Stars breathed new life into their survival fight with a stunning 3-1 victory over Police FC at the Kavumba Recreation Grounds on Thursday evening.

In a match where few gave them a chance, Bright Stars tore through their opponents with a relentless first-half display that left the visitors reeling and pushed them closer to the relegation battle.

The hosts wasted no time in making their intentions clear, breaking the deadlock in just the 8th minute through Noordin Bunjo. A quick attacking move saw Bunjo capitalizing on a defensive lapse to slot home the opener, sending an early shockwave through the Police camp.

Barely two minutes later, Bright Stars doubled their lead in emphatic fashion. A well-delivered cross from Innocent Kitimbo found Nelson Ssenkatuka, who rose highest to head the ball past the stranded Police goalkeeper. The home crowd erupted as Bright Stars took full control of the game.

Police struggled to regain composure, and things went from bad to worse in the 32nd minute. Ssenkatuka, brimming with confidence, stepped up to take a free kick from the edge of the box and curled a brilliant effort straight into the net. It was a clinical first-half performance from Bright Stars, who went into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

Police emerged for the second half with a more determined approach, but Bright Stars remained disciplined, protecting their lead with a well-organized defensive setup. The visitors saw more of the ball but struggled to break through the resilient Bright Stars’ backline.

Their persistence finally paid off in the 77th minute when Daniel Jakony pulled one back, giving Police a glimmer of hope. However, it was too little, too late.

Bright Stars held firm in the closing minutes to secure a much-needed victory, leaving Police frustrated and further embroiled in the relegation battle.

This result has significant implications at the bottom of the table. Despite the victory, Bright Stars remain in the drop zone, sitting 14th with 15 points.

However, they have now closed the gap on Police, who are just one spot above them in 13th with 23 points. With eight points separating the two sides, the race to avoid relegation is tightening.

Looking ahead, Coach Simon Peter Mugerwa’s charges will have to quickly get together as they prepare to host Mbarara City at Kavumba on Thursday, April 10.

Meanwhile, Bright Stars will look to build on this momentum when they travel to Nakivubo to face URA at the Hamz Stadium a day earlier.

Elsewhere, Thursday’s football action will continue with a late kickoff at 7 PM as Lugazi visits Vipers in Kitende.
