Buhimba United Saints Football Cub left it late but earned a deserved 1-1 draw against Police FC on Tuesday evening at The Royal Park in Butema, with Erick Washington Nyonyitono striking in stoppage time to rescue a point.
Coming into the match as underdogs and deep in the relegation battle, Buhimba showed fight against a Police side pushing to cement a top four place.
The game started at a high tempo, with early bookings for Hussein Mwanje and Nyonyitono in a fiery opening. Buhimba threatened from set pieces but Police stayed organized at the back.
There was more drama before the break. Buhimba head coach Robert Mukasa was sent off in added time of the first half, forcing the hosts to regroup at halftime with the score still 0-0. Police’s Benon Tahomera had also been booked moments earlier.
Police returned stronger after the restart and began to control the tempo. A dangerous free kick signaled their intent before changes on the hour mark shifted momentum. Reagan Male and Teny came on in the 62nd minute, and the move paid off.
In the 75th minute, Reagan finished off a move set up by Tahomera to give Police a 1-0 lead. It looked enough to seal all three points.
But Buhimba refused to fold. Deep into stoppage time, John Bosco Ssempijja delivered a telling ball into the box.
Nyonyitono reacted quickest, scoring in the 90+3rd minute to spark wild celebrations and snatch a vital draw. His late goal capped a tireless performance and earned him Man of the Match honors.
The result leaves Police fourth on 32 points, missing a chance to strengthen their grip on the top four. Buhimba remain 13th with 15 points, but the point could prove crucial in their survival fight.
Next, Police host BUL FC on March 3, while Buhimba face KCCA FC on March 2.
