2025/26 Uganda Premier League | MD 17 | Tuesday February 17,

  • Entebbe UPPC FC 1-0 Mbarara City FC

Under the fading Tuesday sun at Bugonga Fisheries Grounds in Entebbe, Entebbe UPPC FC ground out a hard earned 1-0 win over Mbarara City to stay firmly in the Uganda Premier League title race.

Ambrose Kigozi was the difference. The forward struck in the 43rd minute, calmly finishing from Steven Munguci’s pass to hand Entebbe their 10th win of the season and ninth clean sheet.

It was also Kigozi’s ninth goal of the campaign as he edges closer to his target of 17.

The match started late due to licensing issues involving three players, but Entebbe quickly took control once play began.

They dominated possession early, with Julius Poloto and Adongo lively on the wings, though the final ball lacked accuracy.

Poloto’s teasing cross in the fifth minute narrowly missed Munguci in front of goal.

Kigozi had the ball in the net on 12 minutes after a swift counter led by Mubiru, but the effort was ruled offside. John Kokas later saw his shot blocked as Mbarara’s defence scrambled clear.

The visitors threatened from distance. Issa Bugembe forced a smart save from Derrick with a powerful strike, while Kanyike fired over the bar. But as halftime approached, Entebbe’s pressure told.

Munguci found Kigozi inside the box, and the striker kept his composure to slot home and send the home fans into celebration.

Mbarara returned from the break with more urgency and made changes at halftime. They enjoyed more possession and won several set pieces, but Entebbe’s backline stayed organised.

There was brief confusion when Sadat Nsubuga was shown a yellow card and asked to correct his shirt number, temporarily reducing Mbarara to 10 men. Still, the visitors pushed for an equaliser.

Entebbe nearly doubled their lead in the 76th minute when Poloto rattled the crossbar after being picked out by Kigozi.

Bogere also missed a late chance, but the hosts held firm through three minutes of added time to secure all three points.

The result lifts Entebbe UPPC to third on 34 points, one win behind leaders Vipers and second-placed Kitara. Mbarara City remain 12th with 15 points after their eighth defeat of the season.

Entebbe next travel to face Kitara at Royal Park, Butema on March 3, while Mbarara City visit URA a day later.

Elsewhere, Buhimba United Saints drew 1-1 with Police, Erick Washington Nyonyintono cancelling out Male Reagan’s opener.
