2025/26 Uganda Premier League | MD 16 | Thursday February 12,
- Mbarara City FC 1-0 Calvary FC
When Mbarara City needed a hero, Clinton Kamugisha stepped up again, this time not as a shot stopper but forward.
On Thursday evening at Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge, the forward scored the only goal in a hard fought 1-0 win over Calvary, ending the Ankole Lions’ five-match winless run. It was their first victory since beating URA 1-0 on December 17, 2025.
For a side that has faced off-field struggles, including delayed salaries, this was a much needed lift.
The game started at a lively pace. Mbarara won an early free kick inside five minutes, while Calvary responded through Eric Otingcwinyu, whose effort went wide.
Ibrahim Dada later blasted a free kick over the bar as both teams searched for an opening.
Clear chances were rare in the first half. Matata combined well with Junior, but the final shot lacked direction.
Sukuru Hadji produced a fine save in the 34th minute to keep Mbarara at bay, and a collision involving Olado and Hadji briefly halted play.
Calvary thought they had found the breakthrough from a corner through John Rogers, but a handball decision ruled it out. The teams went into the break level at 0-0.
Mbarara returned with intent, introducing Kakaire and Ahumuza at halftime. Calvary nearly struck in the 52nd minute when Dada’s effort almost slipped through.
Two minutes later, Kamugisha made the difference. In the 54th minute, he found space and calmly finished past the goalkeeper, sparking celebrations on the Mbarara bench. It was a composed striker’s goal and enough to earn him Man of the Match honors.
Calvary pushed hard for an equaliser. Dada missed a volley, a long-range effort flew wide, and a late corner in stoppage time caused panic.
Tensions rose, with Gabriel, Rogers and Isaac Arinda booked, while Coach Otim also saw yellow. But Mbarara’s defence held firm.
After three minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a precious victory.
The win lifts Mbarara City to 12th on 15 points, above URA FC, while Calvary remain bottom with four points.
Mbarara next travel to face Entebbe UPPC at Bugonga Fisheries Grounds on February 17. Calvary return home to host Express at Midigo P/S Playground a day later.
Elsewhere, 10-man Police beat Lugazi 2-1, and Kitara secured a 1-0 away win over Maroons in Luzira.
