Uganda Premier League

  • KCCA FC 2-1 SC Villa

KCCA FC claimed early bragging rights in the Kampala derby, beating SC Villa 2–1 in a tense clash at Mandela National Stadium on Saturday.

The football was thrilling, but the build-up was anything but. FUFA’s new league format drew heavy criticism, with fans boycotting the doubleheader and champions Vipers SC refusing to honor their fixture against Kitara FC.

On the pitch, however, KCCA and Villa put on a show. Ivan Ahimbisibwe opened the scoring in the 31st minute, finishing calmly after a slick one-two with Ashiraf Mugume, a goal reminiscent of his CHAN 2024 strike for Uganda.

Villa hit back on the hour mark when Najib Yiga converted a penalty he had won himself. But just when the game seemed destined for a draw, former Villa forward Umar Lutalo came off the bench to break his old club’s hearts, curling in a superb 89th-minute free kick past David Lukwago.

The win takes KCCA to four points from their first two games, while Villa start the season empty-handed and with plenty to reflect on, both on and off the pitch.
