UPL: KCCA’s draw with Express blows the title race wide

Thirteen-time Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC were held to a goalless stalemate by Express FC at the Luzira Prisons grounds on Saturday.

The draw left the battle of who will become the champion for the current season wide open, and up for grabs.

Three teams; KCCA, SC Villa and Vipers SC are now tied at the top with 46 points each with three games to the end of the campaign.

The latter occupy the summit with a superior 19-goal difference, which betters KCCA’s 15 and Villa’s five, who lie second and third, respectively.

It’s also worth noting that with 25 matches played and with only three left, 46 points for the leaders is a manifestation of an abysmal show for topflight football.

This is especially because in the preceding season, champions Vipers garnered a huge 74 points, with the runners-up KCCA collecting 56.

Whoever will win the title this round can not make 56 points, with the best they can tally being 55.

Nonetheless, the next three matches will be finals for each of KCCA, Vipers and Villa, as a dropped point could imply going home empty-handed.

Third-placed Villa has UPDF FC, Blacks Power FC and URA FC as the final matches for the current season.

KCCA, in second, still has to host each of BUL FC and Soltilo Bright Stars FC, with an away tie to Busoga United also awaiting.

On the other hand, Vipers will host Express FC on Tuesday, and visit BUL before returning home for the final season bout, against Busoga United.

It’s set to be mouthwatering at the business end of the campaign, with fingers crossed over who’ll eventually smile home with the glory.
