It was a Friday of revival, resilience and redemption in the Uganda Premier League as Lugazi FC mounted a stunning comeback, Police FC toppled a seasonal title hopeful and NEC reignited their title chase with a composed performance under the lights.
- Lugazi rise from the ashes to stun Bright Stars
At Lugazi Stadium, the home side delivered one of the most electrifying performances of the season coming from behind to defeat Bright Stars 3-1.
Early tension filled the air when Noordin Bunjo fired Bright Stars ahead in just the 8th minute, finishing off a clever link-up with Warren Buule.
Despite a nearly doubled lead from Nelson Senkatuka moments later, Lugazi’s defense held on. Coach Steven Bogere’s second-half substitutions turned the tide completely.
Alvin Birungi came off the bench to equalize in the 72nd minute before Buga Moses added a stylish goal two minutes later to flip the game on its head. Birungi would strike again, combining with Buga in a flowing move to put the game beyond reach.
Now sitting 12 points clear of the relegation zone with 31 points, Lugazi have found new momentum ahead of their next clash away to BUL FC.
Bright Stars, rooted in 15th with 16 points, are left battling the growing specter of relegation.
- Police FC silence URA with clinical Kasumba brace
In Kavumba, Police FC put an end to URA’s four-match unbeaten streak in commanding fashion with a 2-0 win, signaling a strong start under their new technical team.
After a balanced first half, striker Umar Kasumba took control in the second. He opened the scoring in the 55th minute after connecting with Abdu Jemba’s pinpoint pass, and followed it up with another sharp finish just two minutes later from Reagan Male’s assist.
The victory lifts Police to 30 points in 12th place and extends their own unbeaten run to three games. They next face a tough away fixture against KCCA FC.
Meanwhile, URA FC still 4th with 42 points and will aim to bounce back against SC Villa.
- NEC keep pressure on Vipers in title hunt
Under the Friday night lights at Lugogo, NEC returned to winning ways with a disciplined 2-0 victory over bottom-placed Mbale Heroes.
The result keeps the ‘Die Hards’ in second place with 54 points, just five behind table leaders Vipers with five games left to play.
James Jarieko opened the scoring with a thumping header from an Isma Kawawulo corner in the 32nd minute.
Moments into the second half, Cromwell Rwothomio added the second with a well-placed finish, sealing NEC’s 16th win of the campaign.
For Mbale Heroes, the loss was their 19th of the season, still anchored at the foot of the table with just 10 points.
