- Maroons FC 1-0 BUL FC
Maroons FC made a winning return to Uganda Premier League action, edging BUL FC 1-0 at Luzira Prison Grounds on Wednesday evening.
After the long break, the game started cautiously, with both sides struggling to find rhythm.
Maroons came close early on when Ivan Mayanja got a sight of goal, but BUL goalkeeper Adrine Isabirye was alert to deny him.
BUL tried to grow into the game, earning a corner through Lawrence Kambugu, but the hosts stayed compact.
The breakthrough came in the 21st minute. A poor clearance from BUL fell to Mayanja, who curled his shot goalward. The ball took an awkward bounce, beating Isabirye and giving Maroons the lead.
From there, Maroons stayed organised and forced BUL to do most of the chasing. The visitors nearly responded before halftime through a well-worked move involving Kambugu, Isaac Wagoina and Reagan Kalyowa, but Wagoina’s effort was comfortably saved by Simon Tamale.
Maroons threatened again when Ivan Ashaba danced past three defenders before being brought down near the box, but they went into the break holding onto their slim lead.
BUL returned stronger in the second half, pushing forward and making changes to find an equaliser.
Kiwanuka led a quick counter early on, but the final ball let them down. As the half wore on, both sides made substitutions, with Maroons refreshing their midfield and BUL throwing on attacking options.
In the closing stages, BUL pushed even deeper, committing more players forward, including defender Nicolas Mwere. But clear chances remained hard to come by.
Maroons goalkeeper Simon Tamale stood firm throughout and was deservedly named Man of the Match, keeping BUL at bay to secure all three points.
The win moves Maroons to ninth on 29 points, just one behind BUL FC.
Next, Maroons visit NEC FC at Lugogo on April 17, while BUL travel to face URA FC at Hamz Stadium a day earlier.
Elsewhere today Express FC will host Police FC at the Hamz Stadium at 8 pm
