KCCA FC returned to familiar territory at the top of the Uganda Premier League after grinding out a 2–1 win over Mbarara City in Kamwenge on Friday.

The Kasasiro Boys showed grit and a bit of flair to overcome a Mbarara side that fought bravely but couldn’t hold on.

Herbert Achayi set KCCA on their way in the 16th minute, rising to meet Joel Sserunjogi’s curled corner with a smart header.

Mbarara City hit back quickly. Muhammad Kanyike danced past his marker and calmly slotted home to level the game, lifting the belief among the Ankole Lions. For a moment, they looked capable of flipping the contest.

KCCA nearly regained the lead soon after, but Filbert Obenchan fired wide from another Achayi setup.

Their pressure finally told five minutes after halftime when Achayi turned provider again, whipping in a perfect cross that Ivan Ahimbisibwe tucked away for the winner.

There was a scare for KCCA in the 53rd minute when Wycliff Ahumuza’s poor back pass almost caught goalkeeper Aaron Icumar off guard, but they survived the moment.

Mbarara City pushed hard late on, throwing everything forward in search of a point, but KCCA stayed composed and saw the job through.

The win lifts KCCA to 17 points and back to the summit. Mbarara City, meanwhile, remain in deep trouble, 15th on the table with just five points from eight matches.
