2025/26 Uganda Premier League | MD 16 | Thursday February 12,
- Police FC 2-1 Lugazi FC
For years, Lugazi had been Police FC’s stubborn hurdle, four draws and one defeat, but no victory. On Thursday evening at the Police Arena in Kamwokya, that story finally changed.
Police edged Lugazi 2-1 in a tense Uganda Premier League clash to secure their first ever win over the Najjembe-based side and end a two match winless run.
Lugazi started brightly. Inside three minutes, they won a corner and unsettled the hosts. Freedom Mungudit soon forced Mathias Muwanga into a sharp save, with the Police goalkeeper called into action again moments later.
But as Lugazi pressed, Police struck. In the 15th minute, Charles Bbaale capitalised on hesitation in the Lugazi defence, drove forward and finished calmly to give Police the lead.
Three minutes later, Bedia Ikamba nearly doubled the advantage but failed to convert Matovu’s inviting cross. The second goal, however, soon arrived.
On 24 minutes, Bbaale turned provider, setting up Ikamba, who slotted home to make it 2-0. In less than ten minutes, Police had taken control.
Lugazi responded with Mungudit curling an effort wide, and tactical changes followed before halftime, but Police went into the break comfortably ahead.
The visitors returned with urgency after the restart. Substitutions on both sides lifted the tempo, and Police almost added a third in the 54th minute when Ikamba tapped wide after good work from Tezikya.
Lugazi kept pushing. Ashraf Mulindi tested Muwanga, while Alfred Leku missed a free header that could have shifted momentum.
The match turned in the 77th minute when Ikamba, already booked, fouled Ayiko and received a second yellow card. Reduced to ten men, Police were forced to defend deep.
The pressure told in the 85th minute when Jakony handled the ball in the box. Abdul Kalanzi converted the resulting penalty to pull Lugazi back to 2-1.
With four minutes added on, Lugazi searched for an equaliser. This time, however, Police held firm. Muwanga commanded his defence, and the final whistle confirmed a long-awaited victory.
Bbaale, who scored and assisted, was named Man of the Match.
The win lifts Police to third with 31 points, four behind Kitara, who beat Maroons 1-0 in Luzira through John Bosco Byaruhanga’s goal. Lugazi remain 11th on 15 points.
Police next visit Buhimba United Saints on February 17, while Lugazi host UPDF a day later.
Elsewhere, Clinton Kamugisha’s strike gave Mbarara City a 1-0 win over Calvary at Rwamwanja Stadium, leaving Calvary still without a victory.
