The Uganda Premier League (UPL) Secretariat has expressed concern over Vipers Sports Club’s decision and public statements regarding their refusal to play in a scheduled double header.
In a statement, the Secretariat clarified several issues raised by the club, touching on league reforms, club earnings, and administrative procedures in the ongoing 2025/26 season.
The UPL noted that the season began with fifteen registered clubs, all of which accepted the new competition reforms after broad consultations, except Vipers SC.
Despite that, the Secretariat and FUFA remain committed to maintaining an open relationship with the club and working together for the growth of Ugandan football.
The Secretariat also revealed that Vipers received UGX 110 million in the last three months, including UGX 60 million for winning the 2024/25 league title.
On the matter of player registration, the UPL explained that FUFA’s access to such data is legal and procedural under FUFA and CAF licensing regulations. This access ensures transparency, compliance, and player protection across all clubs.
Responding to Vipers’ claim that other teams are “small clubs,” the Secretariat emphasized that all UPL clubs are equal shareholders with identical voting rights.
It further clarified that the ongoing reforms were shaped through consultations involving clubs, legal teams, sponsors, and FUFA departments, processes that remain open to ensure inclusivity and alignment with international football standards.
Addressing contract reforms, the UPL said the two-year contract guideline is not new but a collectively agreed policy that balances player welfare with club sustainability, similar to global football practice.
On the issue of fixtures, the Secretariat explained that the double header format is optional and only applied when both clubs agree. Its aim is to boost fan engagement, media exposure and matchday experience.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the UPL’s commitment to professionalism, transparency and unity.
The Secretariat assured stakeholders that the 2025/26 season will proceed as planned, guided by fairness, integrity, and a shared vision to elevate Ugandan football.
