Uganda Premier League | Friday | MD 29
- URA 4-1 Wakiso Giants
- Bright Stars 5-1 Mbale Heroes
- Mbarara City 2-0 Express
Despite Vipers already clinching the 2024/25 title, Uganda Premier League winds down with just one matchday remaining, three clubs, URA FC, Bright Stars and Mbarara City ended Matchday 29 on a high with emphatic home victories that told different stories of ambition, redemption and farewell.
- Tax Collectors seal top-four finish
At Nakivubo Stadium, URA FC showcased their attacking firepower in a 4-1 demolition of relegated Wakiso Giants. The Tax Collectors, led by a clinical Joseph Semujju, who bagged a brace and an assist, dominated from the outset.
Semujju opened the scoring in the 20th minute and quickly turned provider for Ivan Ahimbisibwe whose 16th goal of the season keeps him in the golden boot race.
Semujju returned to the scoresheet moments later, making it 3-0 before Wakiso’s Hudson Mbalire offered a fleeting response just before halftime. Despite some improved second-half play from the visitors, it was substitute Bruno Bunyaga who sealed the win for URA late on.
The result elevated URA to 52 points and locked in a top-four finish with one game to go, an away clash against NEC FC.
- Bright Stars dazzle in relegation farewell
In Kavumba, Bright Stars offered fans a parting gift with a commanding 5-1 victory over fellow relegated side Mbale Heroes. It was a bittersweet moment for both clubs, already condemned to next season’s FUFA Big League, but Bright Stars avenged their first-leg loss in spectacular style.
A Peter Ssenkungu own goal and a quick equalizer by Abdul Malik Bironse had the game level midway through the first half. But a brace from John Kokas Alou and late strikes from Shafik Kakande and Nelson Ssenkatuka ensured Bright Stars ended their home campaign on a high.
While the win won’t lift Bright Stars from 15th place, it snapped a long winless spell and restored some pride. Mbale Heroes, now without a victory in 19 straight matches, remain rooted to the bottom of the table with just 10 points.
- Mbarara City tame Express at home
Meanwhile, in Mbarara, the Ankole Lions saw off Express FC with a composed 2-0 win at Kakyeka Stadium. Brian Ndifuna struck early in the second half before Nasur Almahad Sadik put the result beyond doubt in the 78th minute.
Mbarara City’s victory over the inconsistent Red Eagles gives them momentum heading into the final round, even if it has little bearing on the standings.
With just one matchday left, the focus now shifts to the final fixtures on May 24. URA will aim to finish strong against NEC FC, while Wakiso Giants prepare for their final top-flight outing against Police FC before bidding farewell to the UPL.
For relegated sides Bright Stars and Mbale Heroes, the final day offers little more than a chance to end on a positive note or simply brace for a new beginning in the second tier.
