- URA FC 0-3 Vipers SC
Abdul Karim Watambala pulls off an exceptional performance with a brace to see Vipers SC land safely in a new life without their star player, who left the Kitende-based club for Tanzanian Giant Young African.
Despite Watambala having been among the responsible players for Vipers SC’s victory against URA FC on January 24 at Nakivubo Stadium, the midfielder was the player who proved by action to carry the team as they returned to the top of the Uganda Premier League.
Watambala scored in the opening minute of the game to put his side in front and sealed the victory in the 88th minute.
In fantasy football, they benefited greatly from URA FC’s shaky defense, which saw defender Ronald Otti set up his opponent, Gusto Mulongo, in the 81st minute.
After receiving their punishment from Mulongo, who finished with a flick after exchanging the ball with Usama Arafat, who counted the goal assist to his name.
In the 85th minute, URA FC had their chance to score after Vipers SC goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza gave the ball away to Nelson Ssenkatuka, but he directed the ball past the goal posts.
In other chances, Fred Amaku had his header cleared off the line by Hillary Mukundane, and Mudekereza punched Joseph Ssemujju’s cross away. The two incidents happened while the game was still 1-0.
After 12 games, Vipers SC is leading with 30 points despite having played a game less than other teams, with their missed game against Kitara FC remaining uncertain.
Meanwhile, URA FC continues to struggle, making it 5 winless games in the Premier League as they penetrate the drop zone, sitting second last with 11 points from 13 games.
In seeking a bounce back, URA FC will travel to Calvary on January 27 as new coach Hussein Mbalangu continues to look for his first point at URA FC as they fight for their survival.
Up in the title race, Vipers SC will be back in action on January 27 to challenge Police FC at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende.
