The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) is continuing its efforts to promote sports participation among Ugandan students by introducing new sports and opening up bidding for hosting rights for the next five years.
Building on the success of recent years, USSSA has seen a surge in participation in its various sports programs. To further encourage involvement, the association has added swimming to its U16, U18, and U20 age categories, with four meets scheduled for the upcoming school terms. Additionally, USSSA is working with the Ministry of Education and Sports to include Futsal, gymnastics, and taekwondo in the 2025 calendar.
To streamline its offerings, USSSA has re-categorized the U16 boys’ and girls’ volleyball, handball, basketball 3×3, and girls’ netball events into a single category known as “Ball Games 1.” This decision comes in response to the success of the previous four years, which saw USSSA schools excel at international competitions.
After hosting games in various regions of Uganda, USSSA is now inviting schools to submit bids to host the games. The association is encouraging schools, both individually and in partnership with others, to participate in the bidding process.
USSSA President Justus Mugisha has urged schools to submit their bids by September 30, 2024. He emphasized that the association will consider schools’ facilities when evaluating bids but also welcomes proposals from schools that are willing to invest in new facilities.
Previous hosts of the USSSA games include Mbale SS, Jinja SS, Teso College Aloet, Sacred Heart SS Gulu, Dr Obote College Boroboro, Mvara SS, Ntare Schools, Nyakasura SS, St Mary’s Rushorooza, Ndejje SS, and Masaka SS.
