With just over a month to the start of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifiers, Victoria Pearls head coach Lawrence Ssematimba has revealed the emphasis of his team during training.

The Victoria Pearls entered residential training in Entebbe last week as part of preparations for this Qualifier.

Eighteen players were entered into this camp, and as the tournament nears it’s start, Ssematimba says their main focus in training is improving on power play.

“We are working more on the batting thats why we are now accessing the indoor nets,” Ssematimba said.

“We want to improve on scoring most especially in the power play.

“But we are also making sure that the bowlers are hitting the correct lines and length.”

Ssematimba goes on to say that the residential camp is helping the team achieve it’s objective as it promotes team work.

“This camp is helping us in making sure that the girls get more time together; build a bond among themselves as we aim to work together as a team.”

Uganda will compete against seven other teams including Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Botswana for a place in the Global Qualifiers as only the top two teams from this continental Qualifier progress to the globals.

The continental Qualifier will run between December 7-18 at the Green Oval in Entebbe, but before it gets underway, it will be preceded by an all-Eastern African mini-tournament that will feature Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda in November.

The mini-tournament is a curtain raiser for the big one in December.
