Victoria University’s rugby team is on the verge of another historic milestone after winning the second circuit of the 2025 University 7s series, bringing them within sight of a third consecutive national crown.
Fresh off their victory in the opening leg at Makerere University’s Graveyard Grounds, the Victoria Sharks defended home turf at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds though hosted by Kyambogo University, edging Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) 21–19 in a tense final.
Unlike their comfortable 14–5 win in the first circuit, this time Victoria had to fight for every point.
Tries from Dan Katerega, Blaise Ochieng, and Stuart Mwayi plus conversions from Katerega and Mwayi, made the difference in a tense contest.
UMU’s Moses Ali, Eku Emmanuel, and Peter Sekabira each crossed the line, but with only two successful conversions, they fell just short.
Led by the Rhinos twins, Arnold Ocen and Arthur Opio, UMU again proved to be Victoria’s toughest test but couldn’t stop the champions’ momentum.
With back to back circuit wins, Victoria now needs only a top-two finish in the final leg to clinch the 2025 title, extending their dominance in university rugby to a third straight season.
Meanwhile, traditional contenders like Makerere, UCU, and Kyambogo have struggled to keep up, with Makerere finishing a disappointing seventh in the latest circuit.
At the Makerere Rugby Grounds this Sunday is where Victoria University will aim to complete their hat-trick and reaffirm their status as the undisputed kings of university rugby.
