Defending champions Vipers SC will start their Uganda Premier League title defense against Gaddafi FC on Sunday, September 17, 2023, at the Gaddafi Arena in Jinja.
The Venoms, who lost 1-0 to Gaddafi away last season, will be looking to start the new season on a high note.
They have only won once in their opening games of the season in the previous three seasons, and that was during the 2021/2022 season when they beat Police 2-0.
Vipers are also in line to win their third consecutive league title for the first time. Only SC Villa has achieved this feat before.
They were eliminated in the CAF Champions League this season, so their focus has now shifted to retaining the league title or even winning a double like they did last season.
Coach Leonard Neiva knows that his job security will depend on whether he can guide the team to success.
“We now shift our attention to the league,” he said. “We know it won’t be easy, but we shall fight hard to win the title. Our target is to start on a winning note against Gaddafi.”
Gaddafi, who struggled for relegation last season, will have to be at their best to stop Vipers. Coach David Mutono, who replaced Wasswa Bbosa, will be expected to lead his side to a winning start.
“We have prepared for the game and we are ready to deliver,” he said. “Just like we beat Vipers last season, we can still do the same in Sunday’s tie.”
The last four encounters between both sides, Vipers has gone on to win twice while Gaddafi once.
