The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Level 2 Coaching Course is officially underway in Lugogo, Kampala, Uganda. This intensive eight-day workshop (June 20th-28th, 2024) is led by Daje Annirao from Mauritius and features coaches from Uganda, Lesotho, Benin, Djibouti, Botswana, Nigeria, Egypt, and Zambia.

Ugandan Coaches Sharpen Their Skills:

Fatimah Nabirungi, Hellen Luzika, Frank Muwuluzi, Godfrey Kivumbi, and Nambuya Lizzy are the five Ugandan coaches participating in the course. With limited spots available, many coaches missed out due to late applications or lack of interest.

Advanced Training for Elite Coaches:

Daje Annirao emphasizes the advanced nature of Level 2 compared to Level 1, requiring coaches to master both theoretical and practical aspects of badminton coaching. Participants will receive certificates upon successful completion of the course.

Boosting Ugandan Badminton:

Simon Mugabi, CEO of the Uganda Badminton Association, highlights the importance of this workshop. With more Level 2 coaches, Uganda can empower its coaches to train professional badminton players both domestically and internationally.

Active Player, Aspiring Coach:

Egypt’s Ahmed Saleh, a current national badminton player, is also among the participants. He aims to gain valuable knowledge to contribute to the future success of Egyptian badminton.

Day 1 Activities:

The opening day of the workshop saw a range of activities, including introductions, icebreakers, course structure discussions, small group work on coaching techniques, delivery practice, and coach evaluation techniques.

Elevating Ugandan Badminton Coaching:

Uganda currently has six Level 2 coaches: Ivan Kalimunda (Head Coach), William Kabindi, Betty Apio, Ronald Lule, Edwin Masiko, and Annet Nakamya (Badminton Association President). These coaches obtained their certifications in a similar workshop held in 2018.

Requirements for Participation:

  • Strong Academic Background: The Level 2 program is rigorous, covering anatomy & physiology, biomechanics, fitness testing, training methods, and training parameters.
  • BWF Level 1 Certification: Prior completion of the BWF Level 1 Coaching Course is mandatory.
  • English Language Proficiency: Fluency in spoken and written English, as well as familiarity with badminton terminology, is essential.
  • Full Attendance: Participants must be present for the entire duration of the course.
  • WADA Online Module: Completion of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) online module is compulsory for assessment.

Post-Course Assessment:

Following the eight days, coaches will be assessed on their competencies to achieve the BWF Level 2 Coach Award. Assessments will be conducted in groups using the provided assessment tools.

Second Time Hosting WBF Course:

This marks the second time Uganda has hosted the WBF Level 2 Coaching Course, building upon the success of the 2018 program.
