Ahead of the University Football League Quarterfinals first leg on Tuesday, when Bugema University will play host to Kampala University, Meddy Nyanzi, the head coach of the hosts, has ranked his side as favorites in the two-legged quarterfinal contest.
“Currently, the Bugema team is strong, though we have a red card, we remain good enough for KU. We know their capabilities, and we shall start from there because our players are technically good.”
With the teams taking the first test of this season’s Quarterfinals, Kampala University is holding a better head-to-head advantage and remains ahead with a pedigree of being two-time champions.
With the records clearly pointing at KU, a side in good form being unbeaten in group A, which it led with 13 points, Nyanzi insisted, “We anticipated it so that we can utilize our opportunity to get them out of this year’s championship.”
Bugema University came out of group B beating teams like the 2024 champions, Nkumba University, to keep their continuous knocking for their first UFL Triumph, having played two finals. In recent seasons, at least, they have been making their way to the semifinals at most attempts, including last season when they were defeated by Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, who went on to win the league.
Meanwhile, Kampala University, despite being two-time champions in 2013 and 2016, their most recent Semifinal appearance was achieved via boardroom decision in the 2024 season, but Nkumba University eliminated them to go on and win that year.
