As Uganda gets ready to host part of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), Cranes forward Usama Arafat has called on fans to play their part.

“Fans are an added advantage. We need them,” the KCCA FC winger said after Tuesday’s training at Namboole Stadium.

At just 20, Usama understands the power of support in big tournaments like CHAN. “A game without fans feels incomplete,” he added.

Usama is part of Uganda’s 25-man squad for the home-soil event, a moment he calls a blessing. “This is a result of hard work. I’m ready to give my best.”

The Cranes are in Group C with Algeria, Guinea, Niger, and South Africa. They start their campaign against Algeria on August 4, followed by Guinea (August 8), Niger (August 11), and South Africa (August 18).

“We’re focused on getting out of the group. We believe we can do it,” said Usama.

Now in its eighth edition, CHAN features only players from domestic leagues. This year’s tournament is historic, co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, and serving as a buildup to AFCON 2027.

Uganda has embraced the moment. Last Friday, President Museveni launched the official jersey, logo, and organizing committee website at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, sparking nationwide excitement.

Teams have started arriving, Niger touched down at Entebbe on Tuesday. The atmosphere is shifting from buildup to kickoff.

For Usama, though, one thing matters most: the fans.

“They cheer us, push us, lift us even when things get tough. We need them.”
