Uganda Cranes made another step towards reaching the AFCON 2025 in Morocco by beating South Sudan 1-0.

The victory was Uganda Cranes’ second in a row, making the third from of the five games under Paul Put.

In the other two games, the Cranes lost to Algeria and drew with South Africa and in the process, an improvement in terms of scoring has been seen. In the 5 games, the Cranes have managed 7 goals while conceding 4.

Despite this, head coach Paul Put rates the reconstruction as still far away from reaching where he desires.

“Good we have won but we still have a long way to go, mostly in the first half we lacked concentration, many players are yet to click to their best abilities and in the first half it looked like it”

After struggling through the first half, Put was forced to make immediate changes at the restart of the second stanza.

Vipers SC playmaker Allan Okello was introduced for Travis Mutyaba while Bobosi Byaruhanga came on for SC Villa’s Ronald Ssekiganda in midfield.

Two minutes into the second half Allan Okello pinpointed a cross to Jude Ssemugabi who had his header saved by the South Sudan goalkeeper but Bevis Mugabi was in the right place to collect the rebound for the winner.

Through the remaining part of the game South Sudan tried their way back but Uganda escaped twice with Halid Lwalilwa clearing off the line.

“We were playing very slowly and always giving the opponent chances, we are going back to work on those weaknesses”

In group K of the 2025 AFCON Qualifiers, Uganda is currently in second position behind South Africa with both teams levelled on 7 points. The Bafana Bafana have a superior goal difference after putting 5-0 past Congo Brazzaville.

Uganda Cranes will travel to South Sudan on Sunday evening for the reverse fixture on 15 October 2024.
