Weatherhead edged rivals Wananchi 4-3 in the final of the Uganda Cup on Friday to complete their first ever domestic double.
The yellow boys who last weekend beat Wananchi to the national Hockey League title by just goal difference proved a little stronger for their fiercest rival as they lifted the Cup to complete the double.
Weatherhead dominated the game from the very start! As early as the 14th minute, Maxwell Mugisha had given them the lead.
Their top scorer Thomas Opio then added the second to ensure the first half ends 2-0. Collins Batusa and Peter Elolu then took the game beyond Wananchi’s reach (at least at that time) when they made it three and four in the third quarter.
Weatherhead were accelerating at this time and they were just a quarter away from a convincing victory, but Wananchi had other ideas.
The Green boys charged up in the final quarter to serve the onlookers with what they had been praying for.
The comeback that didn’t materialize started with Jordan Achaye‘s goal in the 48th minute. Five minutes later, Martin Okello scored Wananchi’s second to put the score at 4:2
But even though Jerome Owori found the third, Wananchi were unable to complete the comeback. Weatherhead managed to hold off their rival as they won the game 4-3.
The game had been a one sided affair, but even after the late drama that probably the neutrals had wished for, Wananchi were not able to upstage their opponent.
The result meant a second trophy in a space of a week for Weatherhead who now boss as the ‘Ssalongo’ of Uganda hockey.
It also meant that for the first time ever, Wananchi were ending the season without a league or Uganda Cup trophy.
