In what many are dubbing the game of the season in the women’s division, defending champions Wananchi will take on Weatherhead Gazelles on Saturday in a match that will have a huge bearing on who takes the trophy this season.
The two sides head into this game separated by just a point. Wananchi are second with 24 points, two below table leaders Kampala Hockey Club while Weatherhead are third with 23 points.
Weatherhead have mastered the art of breathing down Wananchi’s neck, but it is usually from the second position.
They’re doing it this time from the third position, but if they’re to stop Wananchi from lifting a fifth successive title, they must beat the side on Saturday.
The last time these two sides met, a stalemate was registered as the game ended 1-1 on match day two back in March.
Wananchi will feel confident of winning this tie as they better their opponents on both fronts.
The defending champions are the best attacking side in the league having scored the most goals (57). Doreen Mbabazi leads the side’s attack with her 21 goals that see her top the charts in the league.
They also possess the joint meanest defence in the league that has conceded just 4 goals.
As compared to their title rivals, Weatherhead are lagging behind in terms of scoring goals, but also in defence. They have scored just 34 while conceding 15.
But should they win on Saturday, they will overtake Wananchi from the second position. Wananchi however, will dislodge NHC from the top should they secure all three points.
The other women’s game over the weekend will be Deliverance Church against Makerere on Sunday. The latter are placed second last in the league with 7 points while the former are fifth with 11.
