We’re here to finish business – John Murry as Namuwongo Blazers eye Road to BAL glory

Namuwongo Blazers guard John Murry says he feels “a warm feeling in his heart” as he prepares to represent the club in their first-ever Road to BAL tournament, a key qualifier for the Basketball Africa League (BAL).

The Blazers confirmed their final roster on Monday evening, strengthening with three additions: Murry, Joseph Obasa, and Bereal Jaycson Ray.

They join a solid local core of Tonny Drileba, Jimmy Enabu, Ivan Muhwezi, and James Okello, all seasoned players with BAL experience.

For Murry, who previously had a short stint with the Blazers in community games, this return feels personal.

“Man, it’s a warm feeling in my heart. I’m glad to be back,” he said.

“We had a short show last year, but now we’re here to finish business. Shout out to Coach and the Blazers for trusting me in the process.”

The American guard, who once featured for Kadji Sports Academy at this stage, is expected to play a pivotal role in the Blazers’ backcourt. After several days of training, he says the team’s chemistry is already clicking.

“The vibe is beautiful,” Murry said.

“I picked up the plays early, got to know how guys like the ball, how to run and defend together. Everything’s flowing. I’m excited to be here and ready to qualify.”

The Blazers’ qualification route changed recently after Comoros’ Djabal Club replaced Burundi’s Dynamo, who were withdrawn following a federation ban.

That leaves the Blazers in a three-team group with Djabal Club and Tanzania’s Dar City.

Dar City, coached by Maradona Gueye, boasts an all-star lineup featuring Solo Diabate, Nisre Zouzoua, and Raphiael Putney, all with international experience.

Still, the Blazers carry quiet confidence. With a mix of local stars and fresh talent, they believe they can make history by reaching the Elite 16.

As Murry summed it up “We’re here to finish business.”
