On Tuesday evening, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the postponement of the much-anticipated 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
Originally scheduled to take place in 2024, the tournament, set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, has been pushed to August from February 2025.
While CAF has yet to release specific dates, the decision highlights the commitment to ensuring a top-tier football experience for all participants and fans.

Progress Made So Far
Significant strides have been made in the host nations, including the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other essential infrastructure.
The co-hosts — Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda — have showcased their readiness to invest in creating a world-class tournament experience.
These developments reflect the region’s dedication to hosting an event that meets international standards and leaves a lasting legacy.
Why the Postponement?
Despite visible progress, CAF’s Technical and Infrastructure experts, who have been stationed across the three countries, advised that more time is required to complete preparations.
Their focus is on ensuring that all infrastructure and facilities meet the levels necessary for a successful CHAN.
From state-of-the-art stadiums to adequate accommodation and healthcare facilities, the experts emphasized the importance of not compromising on quality or safety standards.
CAF’s decision to delay the tournament demonstrates a proactive approach to address these challenges and uphold the prestige of CHAN as a premier African football competition.
CHAN Draw to Proceed as Scheduled
While the tournament has been postponed, the CHAN Draw will proceed as planned in Nairobi on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, at 8 PM EAT.
With the CHAN Draw just hours away, excitement is low but anticipation remains high as teams and fans await the unveiling of group pairings.
Uganda will be well-represented at this significant event by former Cranes star and legend Hassan Wasswa, adding a touch of national pride.
Adding to the excitement, Ugandan performers will shine on the global stage; Dancer and choreographer David Ssembatya, known as DVD Afro King, the Triplets Ghetto Kids, famed for their performances at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and 2023 CAF Awards too will showcase the Pearl of Africa’s vibrant cultural heritage during the draw ceremony.
Looking Ahead
The postponement, though disappointing for fans, goes hand in hand with CAF’s commitment to delivering a tournament that meets the highest standards.
For Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, this extension offers an opportunity to fine-tune preparations and present the world with an unforgettable CHAN experience in 2025.
