Will Put stay with Cranes? Belgian Coach speaks in “We” ahead of AFCON 2025

As speculation grows over his future, Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put remains focused on preparing the team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The Belgian’s contract with FUFA expires in November, and he has been linked with the vacant Cameroon job.

Yet, in a recent interview with CAFOnline, Put’s constant use of “we” hinted at a man still committed to Uganda’s campaign.

“We played two World Cup qualifiers in October and used them as preparation,” he said.

“Next are two friendlies in November, then a closed camp in Kampala early December with an open session for fans before we fly to Rabat.

Once there, we’ll play more internationals and final tune-ups before meeting Tunisia on December 23.”

His words reflect careful planning and perhaps a quiet message that he intends to stay.

Uganda will return to the AFCON stage for the first time since 2019, drawn in a tough Group B alongside Tunisia, Nigeria, and Tanzania.

“Nigeria are a powerhouse with top European players,” Put said.

“Tunisia are tactical and disciplined, while Tanzania bring energy and familiarity, regional derbies are never easy. We’ll respect all, but we’re not intimidated.”

Put, who led Burkina Faso to the 2013 AFCON final, seems to see himself in Uganda’s journey.

Whether his “we” signals renewed commitment or calm confidence before a possible exit, one thing is clear, Paul Put is already planning as if Uganda’s AFCON story is his own.
