World Amateur Chess Championships: Perfect start for Haruna Nsubuga

Three months since his participation at the FIDE World Cup Chess in Baku, Azerbaijan, Fide Master Haruna Nsubuga is in Muscat, Oman representing Uganda.

The 6th seed in the country alongside CM Kizza Faruk Fauza Karim are among the 347 players competing at the World Amateur Chess Championships 2023 in Oman.

Both players got their campaigns to a perfect start with victories on Thursday in the opening round of the event.

Nsubuga who entered the competition as the reigning Africa Amateur Champion beat WFM Carreras Mendiolea, Paulina Adriana from Mexico in the first round while Kizza saw off Ghorbani Mohammad Mehdi from Iran.

The two are competing under different categories with the FM placed in the Open U2300 category while Kizza is under the U2000 category.

Kizza won bronze at the Africa Amateurs last year in Kenya competing under the same category.

The pair return to action on Friday with duels in the second round.

Nsubuga will face Mongolian youngster Aldar Burentegsh on board 9 while Kizza will be on board 11 against Al Harthy Faisel from Saudi Arabia.

The current standings are led by Syrian FM Malek Koniahli and Saleh Mirzaer from Iran in the U2300 and U2000 respectively.

Both players will be on black in the second round.
