Home Others Zambezi Hockey Series: Uganda ladies on the brink of winning gold

Uganda’s women hockey national team took control of the Zambezi Series in Lusaka, Zambia after beating the hosts 4-2 on Saturday morning.

Martha Kalomo scored from a penalty corner in the second minute, to bag her fifth goal against Uganda in three meetings to give Zambia the lead.

But Uganda equalized through Hilda Star Balondemu 10 minutes later. Lucky Akello made it 2-1 by the end of the third quarter.

Harriet Mtawibo pulled Zambia closer with a second at the start of the fourth quarter and nearly swayed momentum in favour of the hosts.

However, Uganda’s counter attacking approach worked with Balondemu collecting another pass from Alum to make it 4-2 and seal the big win. As it stands now, Uganda only need to avoid a heavy defeat in their last fixture on Sunday to win their category.

Away from the ladies to men, Uganda’s male side was held by Zambia to a 1-all draw in a feisty match.

Emmanuel Baguma converted a penalty corner in the 29th minute after a long spell of see-saw attacks from both sides. But Alfred Mpande pulled Zambia level.

By press time, the men were due to play Malawi in their second meeting of the Series. But they will play Zambia again on Sunday to decide who wins gold.

From Nnalubaale Sports, we wish both Ugandan sides all the best in their quest to big two gold medals home.
