St. Lawrence University (SLAU) edged Ndejje University 2-1 in a thrilling first-leg encounter of the University Football League (UFL) quarterfinals held in Kavule, Mpigi.

The match began dramatically as Ronnie Ziraba put SLAU ahead just 18 seconds after kickoff before any Ndejje player had even touched the ball.

The visitors, however, responded in the second half when Joseph Mutaka capitalized on a rebound in the 54th minute to level the score.

The hosts regained their lead in the 65th minute, courtesy of a defensive mix-up between Ndejje defender Clement Ebasu and goalkeeper Fred Ochen.

This allowed Derrick Kato to tap in what proved to be the winning goal. Despite Ndejje’s relentless search for another equalizer, SLAU’s defence remained resolute, securing a crucial advantage heading into the second leg.

This victory marks an important moment for SLAU, who were previously banned from the league last season in March 2024 for fielding ineligible players. The ban was later lifted, enabling them to compete in the current season.

Ndejje will look to revive their hopes in the second leg on Wednesday 26 March 2025 for a place in the semifinal with SLAU having a Leg in it.
