The Uganda Crested Cranes duo of Fazila Ikwaput and Fauzia Najjemba have been enlisted for the 2022 CAF Awards in respective categories, to celebrate their excellence.
Forward Ikwaput has been nominated for the Player of the Year Award while pacy striker Najjemba has made the nomination list for the Young Player of Year Award.
Whilst the initial list for the Player of the Year Award has 30 players, the Young Player of the Year shortlist has Najjemba and nine others.
Ikwaput was the 2021/22 FUFA Women Super League’s leading scorer with 15 goals with Lady Doves WFC, taking home the golden boot.
Also, she scored in each of the five games the Crested Cranes played as they won the CECAFA Women’s Championship in Njeru, netting six in totality.
Meanwhile, Najjemba was a key pillar in the Crested Cranes’ qualifications campaign for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nation.
The 19-year-old was also named the 2021 Airtel FUFA Female Player of the Year.
Ikwaput and Najjemba are currently on national duty with the Crested Cranes at the ongoing WAFCON in Morocco, where they have lost two games to Senegal (2-0) and Morocco (3-1).
The CAF Awards have not happened for the past two years due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last time they were held, Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala was the Player of the Year.
