Uganda Cranes forward Emmanuel Okwi has officially announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of an illustrious career with the national team.
Okwi’s decision comes just as Uganda Cranes prepare for their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mozambique and Guinea later this month.
In a heartfelt statement shared on his social media, Okwi expressed gratitude for his journey with the national team:

“Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always left a special feeling, and captaining our team was an absolute privilege and honour.”
With East Africa set to host CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, Okwi emphasized the need to pave the way for young talent, believing it is the right time to step aside.
Okwi made his Uganda Cranes debut in 2009 under Scottish coach Bobby Williamson, going on to feature in 95 matches and netting 28 goals.
His leadership and attacking prowess played a key role in Uganda’s AFCON 2017 and 2019 campaigns, as well as several CECAFA triumphs.
In his farewell statement, he extended special thanks to his family, fans, coaches, and FUFA, appreciating their support throughout his career.
