Kitara FC moved closer to promotion to the Uganda Premier League after a 5-1 thrashing of Soroti City FC at Kigaaya Primary Playgrounds on Thursday.

Paul Mucureezi’s brace and a goal apiece from Edson Agondeze, George Ssenkaaba and Paddy Muhumuza ensured Kitara maintained hold of the top of the table.

With two games to the end of the season, Kitara moved to 55 points and are within three points of securing promotion.

On the other hand, Mbarara City FC put up a hugely impressive 5-0 victory over Adjumani TC to hold onto tight their second spot.

Henry Kitegenyi’s hat-trick and one goal each for Seiri Arigumaho and Jamil Nvule did the damage, as the Ankole Lions close in on promotion.

With their 54-point tally, they stay within one point of leaders Kitara, as the battle of who wins the title promises to go down to the wire.

While Mbarara were jubilant, Adjumani, who are on 26 points, got relegated. They survive even when they win all the remaining games.

Meanwhile, third-placed NEC FC slipped in the race for promotion after a 2-1 loss to Lugazi FC at the Coffee Grounds, Bugolobi.

NEC stayed third with 51 points and risk losing their spot to Police FC, who are on 50, having trumped Northern Gateway SC 5-1.

Lugazi ascended to fifth with 40 points after 28 games, but can no longer get promoted to the topflight.
