The Uganda national U18 girl’s basketball team, Junior Gazelles proved too good for neighbors Tanzania as they cruised to an impressive 64-36 victory.

It was the the second win in succession for the Gazelles who on Tuesday beat Rwanda 71-50.

On Wednesday at Lugogo, it all came down to a superb second half defensive show that limited Tanzania to only four and six points in the third and fourth quarters respectively.

“In truth, today was a better performance than against Rwanda despite it coming off a very physical and aggressive Tanzania,” said Assistant coach Rogers Serunyingo.

“We played a good defensive shape and the girls were always shaped up well everytime the opponents tried attacking.”

Ali Mavita’s charges were inspired by Immaculate Adongpiny’s decent 13 points and seven rebounds while Mariam Namukwaya and Darlene Tashobya came up with 12 and 10 points respectively.

The Tanzanians’ dismal display was easily on show after poor individual shows. No single player from their team managed double figures with Nelious Mbugeni their best on the day bagging only eight points.

Uganda committed 29 turnovers, 10 lesser than they made in the 71-50 win over Rwanda, another indication of a good show.

Mavita and her girls will fancy their chances to beat the two sides again on Friday (Rwanda) and Saturday (Tanzania) to seal a ticket to the U18 FIBA Afrobasket.
