Uganda Junior Silverbacks’ coach Brian Wathum blamed panic and stagnant offence as his side fell 38-59 to Rwanda in the opening game of the FIBA Afrobasket Zone V qualifiers on Monday at Lugogo Indoor Arena.
Uganda struggled in the first half, managing an embarrassing five points in the opening quarter.
Despite putting up a better fight in third quarter which they narrowly won 16-15, they trailed by 21 points at the end of the game.
“The boys understood the assignment, they played some good defense but it’s just that we played some stagnant offense today,” Wathum stated to the press.
“We missed some easy layups, we had forced and unforced turnovers so I believe we could have taken care of the ball better.”
“But there is room for improvement, it’s a long week; we have an opportunity to play Rwanda again so we will prepare, adjust and play accordingly.”
“It’s now back to the drawing board, we are going to play great defense in this tournament but if we do not take care of the ball it’s going to be very difficult for us to challenge.”
