The Uganda Junior Silverbacks have been awarded the USPA Young Talent for June, after their heroics in the FIBA Zone Five Qualifiers.

The aforementioned development was revealed at the Uganda Sports Press Association monthly assembly held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

The team qualified for the 2023 FIBA U16 African championship after winning the FIBA Zone Five Qualifiers held in Kigali, Rwanda, last week.

They edged hosts Rwanda 59-57 and picked a walkover against Burundi before trumping Tanzania 116-49 in the other affair.

It was a three-team tournament; Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The other team, Burundi was disqualified for fielding over-age players.

Uganda will return to the finals slated for later this month in Tunisia after a two-year absence.

Egypt, Mali, Algeria, Angola, Guinea, Morocco and Nigeria are the other countries that have already made the finals.

At the finals in Tunisia, Uganda will have a chance of making it to the US FIBA U-17 Basketball World Cup.
