Kabaka Coronation Badminton Tournament launched

As the Kingdom of Buganda continues to celebrate the 32nd Kabaka Coronation, Badminton Uganda and the Kingdom launched the Coronation tournament.

The launch was held on Monday, August 4, at the offices of Youth, Sports, and Arts located at Bulange.

Minister Robert Sserwanga urged the tournament to join in as part of the annual Coronation celebration, as Buganda will absorb the sport of Badminton into other Buganda events due to the mode of the game.

He said; “On an important note, I announce this tournament, which starts with the 32nd Kabaka Coronation celebration, to become a part of the Coronation onward.”

“Also, we are going to include Badminton in our school games. We have been playing four games; now Badminton is becoming the fifth,” he added.

“I am amazed that this sport starts at a young age of under 10, and most importantly, it can also give opportunities to Senior Citizens of 50 years old or above,” he further said.

Over 250 people have confirmed their participation in the inaugural tournament, as registration remains open up to August 6.

Badminton Uganda’s Chief Executive Officer explained; “Though some consider badminton a small sport, it is very important to this nation. It has represented Uganda vibrantly outside there. Being part of the 32nd Kabaka Coronation celebrations, we take it as a golden opportunity. It has attracted over 250 participants, and we are still expecting more before closing the registration process.”

With a participation fee of 5,000/= for kids, 10,000/= for Seniors and Professionals, and 100,000/= for corporate participants.

Female Badminton National team captain Gladys Mbabazi spoke the importance of the launched event. “It is another opportunity to help us the players on improving our game, every time we try on different shorts and this is going to help us to try and Master them, of course I personally I am going into the competition only on the purpose of winning and it will be an honor for me to be the innuagural winner”

The event shall take action between 8th and 10th August 2025 at Lugogo Indoor ndoor Arena with Junior participating in Under 10, 13, 15 and 19.

The seniors shall participate in both Amateur and Professional while Co-operates must be of the age of 34 to 50 as the elderly of 50 to 70 shall also have a chance to play with each category will be played by both genders separately.
