Kampala Hockey Club (KHC) have set off for Harare, Zimbabwe, to represent Uganda at the 2026 Africa Cup for Club Champions, scheduled for January 24 to 31.
This will be KHC’s third straight appearance at the continental championship, a clear sign of their consistency and dominance on the local scene.
Once again, the club carries the nation’s hopes against Africa’s top hockey sides, eager to improve on past performances.
A 30-member delegation will fly the Ugandan flag in Harare, led by club treasurer Sarah Ahabwe Arinaitwe as Chief de Mission. Uganda Hockey Association president Philip Wafula Mulindo is also part of the contingent as the association’s representative.
The team was officially flagged off on Tuesday by National Council of Sports (NCS) Assistant General Secretary (Technical) Milton Chebet, alongside Senior Sports Officer Ann Sarah Nankya, in a ceremony marked by pride and expectation.
KHC depart aboard RwandAir on January 22 at 11:00am and will open their campaign against Namibia’s School of Environmental Health Hockey Club on January 24.
They face a tough group, with matches against United States International University of Kenya on January 25, before taking on Egyptian giants Sharkia on January 28 and Port Fouad on January 29.
Arinaitwe said the team was travelling with confidence and focus, thanking the National Council of Sports for financial support that eased preparations.
Mulindo urged the players to go beyond their previous outings and better their bronze-medal finish from the 2023 championship.
Nankya reminded the team of their role as ambassadors of Uganda, calling for discipline and professionalism on and off the pitch.
Chebet echoed the message, stressing sportsmanship and fair play, and challenged the players to return home with a medal as government support for hockey continues.
The squad includes 18 players captained by Jordan Michael Mpiima, backed by a technical and medical team, officials and media personnel, reflecting KHC’s professional approach to continental competition.
