Kampala University (KU) needed only three minutes to force a comeback as they defeated Bishop Stuart 2-1 in the University Football League at Luzira Prisons ground on Tuesday.

The Ggaba based side trailed 1-0 until the 85th minute before substitutes Collins Namondo and Emmanuel Wabomba scored late to give the home side a bounce-back victory.

Bishop Stuart had taken the lead through Rogers Arinda‘s first-half strike in the 8th minute after a cross from Christoper Muhwezi.

KU tried to get back into the game but Bishop Stuart’s defense remained solid.

KU players Gilbert Wanume, Silver Mwesigye, and Bil Lakomakech were also not lethal enough in the final third as the first half ended with the visitors leading the tie.

In the second half, KU continued from where they left off and piled pressure on Bishop Stuart.

Their efforts paid off late when Wabomba scored after a lapse in defense. They doubled the lead two minutes later after Namondo tapped the ball home following Abbey Mulamba‘s cross.

What the coaches said

KU coach Vicent Tumusiime praised the character of his players.

“We concentrated on our strategy and I believe my players implemented it. I also thank my fellow technical team since we worked as a team to deliver.”

“In the second half we tried to address the challenge of not scoring yet we had created so many chances in the first half.”

“We managed to get the solution with the changes we made and in the end we scored the two goals. But also this was our first game this season so we expected to face this,” Tumusiime said.

This was revenge for KU, who were beaten by Bishop Stuart in the group stages of the Eastern Africa University Games at Ndejje University last year.

Bishop Stuart coach Farouk Karungi is confident that his team can do better in their next games, despite failing to pick up points in their second game.

“In the second half we played under pressure since we were at the receiving end all the time.”

“We are going back home to address these challenges and I believe by the time we face them again in the return at home we shall be a better side,” Karungi said.

The University Football League continues on Wednesday, September 27 with Nkumba University hosting Gulu University in Entebbe.
